Pemayangtse Monastery is a beautiful monastery situated in Pelling in West Sikkim. It is positioned on a hilltop which overlooks the Rebdentse ruins and is built on the highest hill in the neighbouring areas. It stands out like a castle and is a sight to behold. The scenic beauty surrounding it is mesmerizing. About 2kms from Pelling, you can take a trip to the main monastery belonging to Ngingma sect which was constructed in the year 1705 AD. One of the most ancient monasteries in Sikkim, it was established by Gyalwa Lhatsun Namkha Jigme. The monastery was very small when it was first built then Lama Jime Pao, the third incarnation of Lhatsun Namkha Jigme renovated the monastery to a bigger size. After the renovations, alterations and additions of more rooms paintings, sculptures and statues of several idols to the monastery, it became a popular tourist hotspot. It had been the royal chantry and is maintained with good care. Pemayangtse got the modern touch 1950 onwards. In this monastery several events attract large several tourists on two different times of the year. To mark the closing of the Guru Dragmar Dance Festival every year, the 150th years old giant Thanka of Sakyamuni Buddha is showcased in front of the monastery, with a ceremony to welcome and pray for the long life for the devotees.

Pemayangste Monastery, Sikkim
Foreigners must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim. These can be obtained from all Indian Missions, Sikkim Tourism Offices at New Delhi, Kolkata, District Magistrates Office of Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Rangpo on the strength of an Indian Visa. The 30 days duration Permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photocopies of the passport and visa along with two pass port photos of the applicants are made available. The permissible duration of the stay for foreign tourists is 30 days initially.
The State Government is authorized to extend the same by a further period of 30 days. The extension of the permit can be obtained from FRO at Gangtok and office of Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts.
For those interested in going for trekking in the interior region of the state, the Tourism and Civil Aviation issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok which is available for certain specified area for groups consisting of two or more foreigners subject to condition that the trekking programme is arranged through a registered travel agency.
